چکیده

~~Neuromuscular inhibitory effects were monitored in the temporalis and masseter muscles for ten patients with mandibular joint (MJ) syndrome. and ten control subjects with normal occlusions. Analysis of the electromyographic (EMG) silent period in the controls showed no significant difference between durations at median occlusal position, following placement of a maxillary acrylic occlusal splint, and during gum chewing. However. for the patients with MJ syndrome. there was an immediate decrease in their mean EMG silent-period duration upon placement of the splint from 19.23 msec to 15.52 msec. This shortened duration was the same with or without a splint after the pain symptoms had subsided. Precise occlusal adjustment of the dentition at the pain-free appointment resulted in a further reduction (10.83 msec) to within the range of the normal control subjects at median occlusal position. Inhibitory pauses during gum chewing showed similar treatment interactions but, during some chewing cycles. no silent periods were evident.

Carpal tunnel syndrome in the elderly: nerve conduction parameters.

OBJECTIVE To establish nerve conduction parameters for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) electrodiagnosis in the elderly. METHOD Thirty healthy subjects (65-86 years), 9 male and 21 female, were studied. Routine median and ulnar sensory and motor nerve conduction studies, median mixed palmar latency, comparative latency techniques median to ulnar (sensory, mixed and motor lumbrical-interossei), me...

The mandibular response to occlusal relief using a flat guidance splint

BACKGROUND The mechanism of action of occlusal splints used for the successful treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) remains unclear and controversial. AIM The aim of this study was to observe the mandibular response during sleep bruxism (SB) on the elimination of occlusal influences by using a flat anterior and lateral guidance splint (FGS). MATERIAL AND METHOD Any changes in mand...

Relationship Between Electrodiagnosis and Various Ultrasonographic Findings for Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between electrodiagnosis and various ultrasonographic findings of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and propose the ultrasonographic standard that has closest consistency with the electrodiagnosis. METHODS Ultrasonography was performed on 50 female patients (65 cases) previously diagnosed with CTS and 20 normal female volunteers (40 cases). Ultrasonography...

Features in subjects with the frontal occlusal plane inclined toward the contralateral side of the mandibular deviation.

INTRODUCTION The frontal occlusal plane of the maxilla generally inclines toward the ipsilateral side of the mandibular deviation in subjects with facial asymmetry; however, a few patients with facial asymmetry have their frontal occlusal planes inclined toward the contralateral side. We aimed to investigate the morphologic and functional features of such patients. METHODS The subjects were 4...
